6 Unconventional Ways to Use Popcorn

Use Your Imagination with these 6 Creative Popcorn Ideas

Popcorn is already one of the world’s most popular snack foods. But the versatility of those beloved kernels goes far beyond just your standard butter and salt. If you love popcorn as much as we do, you will enjoy stepping outside the normal to try out these different ways to use popcorn.

Breakfast

You may not realize it but the idea of popcorn cereal dates to the colonial days when it was eaten for breakfast with milk and sugar. However, our thoughts are that this modern-day version is not as soggy. We love this recipe for Popcorn Granola Bars. The wholesome ingredients can include honey or maple syrup as a sweetener, as well as a variety of nuts and seeds which add both nutritional value and texture. If you crave something sweeter, another breakfast twist is adding caramel corn as a topping on donuts.

Dessert

Popcorn can be transformed into a decadent dessert just by mixing in your favorite sweets. (One of our favorite recipes is OREO Popcorn!) You can also create candy-coated gourmet popcorn flavors using Signature Blends like Blue Raspberry, Banana, or Birthday Cake! But you don’t have to stop there. Make an irresistible sundae with gourmet popcorn as an ice cream topping. Or use caramel corn to top chocolate brownies, drizzle with caramel sauce, and add a dollop of whipped cream.

Soup and Salads

Just imagine your favorite soup or salad. Now, instead of croutons, shake on popcorn instead! Popcorn is light and airy and makes a tasty garnish. Try it with creamy tomato soup or a fresh chef’s salad. For an extra kick use Signature Shakes for added flavor. For instance, Mediterranean Herb blends together garlic, basil, rosemary, and other seasonings. Or use Ranch seasoning as an alternative to salad dressing.

Snack Mixes

Trail mix is a delicious and fun snack because there are so many ways to customize it. Why not try adding popcorn to your favorite recipe? (Here’s one that includes popcorn mixed with candy-coated chocolate pieces, dried cranberries, nuts, banana chips, and coconut.) Popcorn works well for both sweet and savory variations. We also recommend making popcorn snack mixes using complementary flavors, like Buffalo Breath and Ranch or Hot Jalapeño and Nacho Cheese. Your tastebuds will love the combination of tastes.

Fried Chicken

How does popcorn go with chicken? Take plain popcorn and grind it into a coarse powder. Then use it to coat the chicken in place of breadcrumbs. Next, fry the chicken until it is well browned. Kids will love the crunchy texture and parents will appreciate that it is a whole-grain option. It also works for making cheese sticks too!

Bread

The secret ingredient behind this slightly sweet bread is popcorn! Simply run the plain popped popcorn through a blender or food processor, making sure there are no old maids. It should be the consistency of cornmeal. (Find the full recipe from food.com here.) Try it toasted with jelly!
