How to Beat the Heat in Your Concession Trailer This Summer

4 Ways to Stay Cool While Working in the Heat

The concessions industry is one of the most rewarding careers, but it can also be a grueling job in the height of summer. Hot fryers in small spaces can mean uncomfortable temperatures for you and your employees. But we’ve got proven strategies for keeping cool in the heat while still satisfying your concessions customers. Try these ideas to make summer more enjoyable in your concession trailer.

1. Sell cool snacks. On hot days, customers will be craving something cool and refreshing. Offer shave ice, frozen drinks, and snow cones that are easy to make. During the hottest parts of the day, discount these items. Not only will the lower prices entice customers to choose them over other snacks, but you’ll also attract more people looking for a way to cool off.

2. Choose prepackaged products. Prepackaged items like nacho chips and cheese, pretzels, caramel corn, and cotton candy let you continue to sell a wide variety of items without running hot equipment. Some require no energy use at all, while others simply need a warmer. You can make your own prepackaged items with your equipment early in the day before the mercury rises and have menu items ready for customers during the peak afternoon heat.

3. Outfit your concession trailer appropriately. If you sell fried foods and can’t avoid heating oil, make sure your ventilation is good and install a fan in a safe place. Add shades or awnings to your serving windows and ask to orient your trailer with windows away from the direction of the sun if at all possible. Invest in proper insulation and switch your lighting to LED bulbs that give off less heat than regular incandescent bulbs. Check ceiling and refrigeration vents to make sure they’re clean and free of debris.

4. Insist on safe hot weather practices for heat stress prevention. Drink lots of water, wear sunscreen and/or a hat, and drape a cool wet cloth on the back of your neck. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing. Staff accordingly so that employees can take breaks in a shady spot.

Although you can’t completely avoid the summer heat unless you’re in an air-conditioned building, taking these steps can make working more comfortable for your and your employees, so you have the energy to serve customers with a smile all summer long.
