Celebrate Our Love Affair with Popcorn - Click to read more

Cincinnati, Ohio

Oh that golden maize. The smell makes mouths water, it's tied to generations of memories at family hot spots, and its addictive crunch has been the soundtrack for millions of movies.

While its origins are still debated, popcorn's history is as rich as its flavor, and it's celebrated every October for National Popcorn Poppin' Month.

Celebrate Our Love Affair with Popcorn

  • The oldest known corn pollen was discovered in an 80,000-year-old fossil found 200 feet below Mexico City.
  • Researchers found evidence dating from 3,000 to 6,700 years ago that inhabitants on Peru's northern coast made popcorn.
  • The oldest ears of popcorn are about 5,600 years old and were discovered in the Bat Cave of New Mexico. The ear sizes range from smaller than a penny to about 2 inches.
  • A 1,000-year-old popped kernel was found in a southwestern Utah cave that was occupied by Pueblo Native American predecessors.
  • In 1612, French explorers noted the Iroquois popped corn in heated sand to make soup.
  • Colonial families ate popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast.
  • Street vendors in the 1890s used steam or gas-powered poppers.
  • Popcorn's popularity exploded during World War II when sugar rationing and the 24-hour/day movies brought popcorn to the forefront.

Now people eat more than 16 billion quarts of popped corn each year --- and that's just in America! So get ready to pop up the fun with this delicious snack! How will you celebrate National Popcorn Poppin' Month?

Gold Medal's Certified Food Scientist is part of an elite crowd; less than 1,000 food professionals worldwide have received this honor. For more than eight years, Todd Sunderhaus has set concession food trends, inventing new flavors that inspire worldwide cravings and appeal to generations around the globe.

Sunderhaus recently earned The Certified Food ScientistSM (CFS) title through the Institute of Food Technologists. The credential is a formal global certification program, administered by the International Food Science Certification Commission, which recognizes the applied scientific knowledge and skills possessed by food science professionals throughout the world. CFS credential holders must pass a rigorous exam that tests them on the core professional competencies of a food scientist, and their ability to put that knowledge and skills into practice in a work environment.

Think you know cotton candy? Wait until you taste this.

Gold Medal has been the leader in patented cotton candy revolutions for 62 years. Now, it's done it again with four new flavors that melt in your mouth: Bacon, Chocolate Orange, Chocolate Strawberry, and Chocolate Cherry.

Bacon is not just for breakfast anymore. The new cotton candy is a savory combination of rich, smoky flavor with just the right sweet note of sugar. It's been field tested and won rave reviews at large venues like the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Carnival. Dominic "The Midway Gourmet" Palmieri* quickly sold out in a weekend and said his crowds clamored for the "lip-smacking, finger-licking cotton candy."

The three chocolate fruit mixes all have the sinfully decadent tastes spun into light, airy cotton candy. It's all the flavor, but less calories and carbohydrates. They're so good you won't believe your taste buds.

Reinventing Flavor Boundaries

But don't stop there. A sweet world is waiting to be discovered thanks to Gold Medal's numerous other profit-packed flavors-including the NEW Maple and Choc-O-Floss! Learn more at gmpopcorn.com or 800-543-0862.

Popcorn has been the perfect anytime, healthy snack for more than 4,000 years. But now, new flavor sensations are taking over the nation and consumers are craving twists to this whole grain treat. That's why gourmet popcorn is the 2013 Food Trend, popping up everywhere like: specialty shops, food trucks, weddings, fundraising drives, and restaurants.

NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams recently featured the tasty gourmet popcorn trend, calling the booming business "bursting." CBS News had a piece in February, "Popcorn, the snack that saved the movies" and featured Gold Medal equipment popping up profits.

Countless other food industry sources, media outlets, bloggers, and social networking sites have been raving about the the rich buttery flavor of classic caramel corn, white cheddar truffle, raspberry, and gourmet toppings like real gold.

Popcorn, in general, also has appealing health benefits. It's one of the reasons Publicis Consultants USA and other trend analysis groups called popcorn a 2012 Food Trend. Studies have shown fiber-rich popcorn has higher levels of healthy antioxidants than some fruits and vegetables.

Popcorn is "the perfect snack food," Joe Vinson, PhD, professor of chemistry at the University of Scranton, said. His study found popcorn is the only snack that is 100% unprocessed whole grain, and the average person only eats about half a serving of whole grains a day.

Before the passion for popcorn reached fever pitch, Americans consumed 16 billion quarts of popcorn each year. Imagine what the records will show now as they re-discover the classic crunch of caramel or cheddar cheese. Or tempt their taste buds with new flavor combinations.

Life Lessons from an 11-Year Old - Click to read more

Cincinnati, Ohio

It started simple enough. A home video of a class relay race posted on YouTube quickly became a viral sensation. It now has over 1.4 million views, became a feature on ESPN, and led to more than $6,500 in donations to one local group.

It began with Matt Woodrum only wanting to run with his class. But what the video really captured was a powerful reminder of what Matt and his family had always known: Cerebral palsy didn't mean you simply quit doing what you love. It just meant you may have to work a little harder than some, but strength and character will lead you to victory.

In the home video, the 11-year-old Matt entered the 400-meter-run. When he began to falter, his entire class ran beside him to the finish. Giving up never crossed his mind.

Life Lessons from an 11-Year Old

"I am not really a fan of going that slow. I really wanted to start that race and finish it no matter how bad it hurt," Matt said.

That's what inspired Dan Kroeger, President and CEO of Gold Medal, to invite the family to speak at the annual distributors' conference.

"At least once a week, I find myself thinking about the lessons Matt and his family taught me in the video," Kroeger noted. "Lessons like: Never give up and be yourself. And winning does not mean just who went across the finish line first."

The group at the conference was so inspired by Matt, Anne (Matt's mother), and Susan Schiller the Executive Director of the United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cincinnati (UCP), it gave generously to the organization. While donations are still coming in, Gold Medal corporate, its employees, and dealers have recently given a $6,595 donation to the UCP.

If you would like to see the original video or the ESPN clip, go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Alt2DssYc and espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8296170 respectively. You can also visit Matt's Facebook page at "Let's Go Matt"—Matt Woodrum and learn more about the UCP at the site listed below.

About the UCP and Cerebral Palsy: United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Cincinnati (ucp-cincinnati.org) was founded in 1949 with a mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with disabilities. Each year about 10,000 babies born in the United States will develop cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to one or more specific areas of the brain, usually occurring during fetal development; before, during or shortly after birth; during infancy; or during early childhood. At this time, there is no cure for the developmental brain damage that causes cerebral palsy. Training and therapy however can help improve muscle function and coordination.

Don't call Gold Medal just some popcorn company. For 82 years it's outgrown five locations and expanded its current building four times. It became the worldwide concession leader from its home base in Cincinnati, and has never laid off an employee. And now, as they continue to experience double-digit sales growth, Gold Medal purchased a new building to accommodate this growth, closing in late October 2012.

The new space is located across the street from the current world headquarters, is approximately 42,000-square feet, and is tilt-up concrete construction. It's currently being used for warehousing, but will ultimately serve as manufacturing and storage space.

Gold Medal continues to look toward the future and worldwide expansion by aggressively pursuing new opportunities that not only fit within existing product lines and current distribution channels, but that also expand the overall scope of their market share, including new product lines.
