Changing Lives One Wish at a Time - Click to read more

It's not often that a company can dramatically and directly impact a child's life, especially when he and his family are battling a life-threatening illness. Yet, Gold Medal Products Co., its distributors and employees were given the chance to make one life-changing wish come true.

Joseph is a brave 7-year-old boy that has undergone 30 chemotherapy treatments in battling brain cancer. He asked to go to Walt Disney World® Resort in February. This special vacation will allow him to escape the countless tests and medical treatments, and spend much-needed quality time with his family.

Changing Lives One Wish at a Time

The Gold Medal family answered by raising $7,500 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, Southern Ohio Region during its annual Distributors' Conference in December. This amount will not only fulfill Joseph's wish, it will also go a long way toward helping another child's dreams come true.

It's time to salute one of America’s oldest snack foods. While popcorn and movies didn't become a match made in profit heaven until after World War II, the oldest popcorn traces date back to 4,000 years ago and were found in the Bat Cave of West Central New Mexico. That’s why for this October’s National Popcorn Poppin’ Month, we’re taking a look back at some fun facts from the Popcorn Board, improvements in corn production and popping, and the inventions made by one of the concession leaders during its 80 years in business.

It began in 1931, when David C. Evans purchased Kings Ink for the $2,000 he borrowed on his home. This small company later broadened its ink-only line to include paste, glue and other small item lines. It added concession supplies and equipment to become Gold Medal Products Co.

It's time to make your senses pop! It doesn’t matter if it's caramel, cheese, candy, or traditional buttered popcorn. Americans can't get enough of this tasty treat. And now in October, we're saluting one of the nation's oldest snack foods. It's time to dig in during National Popcorn Poppin' Month.

Did you know that Americans consume some 16 billion quarts of this whole grain treat each year? That's 52 quarts per man, woman, and child!

It's true. The number of Americans munching on popcorn has increased through billions of movie viewings, countless sporting games and family gatherings, World Wars, and The Depression. That’s why for more than 25 years, October is the time to celebrate this crave-inspiring crunch.

October is National Popcorn Poppin' Month

According to the Popcorn Board, a national non-profit organization, October was chosen because "of the popcorn harvest which takes place each fall in the Midwest. Each year when the new crop is harvested, it reminds us popcorn will always be the naturally fun snack for the entire family. Popcorn Poppin' Month is the perfect time to celebrate popcorn."

Fun Popcorn Facts From the Popcorn Board (

  • The oldest ears of popcorn ever found were discovered in the "Bat Cave" of West Central New Mexico in 1948 and 1950. Ranging from smaller than a penny to about 2 inches, the oldest Bat Cave ears are about 4,000 years old.
  • Most U.S. popcorn is grown in the Midwest, primarily in Indiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri.
  • Compared to most snack foods, popcorn is low in calories. Air-popped popcorn has only 31 calories per cup. Oil-popped is only 55 per cup.
  • The world's largest popcorn ball was created by volunteers in Sac City, Iowa in February, 2009. It weighed 5,000 lbs., stood over 8 ft. tall, and measured 28.8 ft. in circumference.
  • In 1519, Cortez got his first sight of popcorn when he invaded Mexico and came into contact with the Aztecs. Popcorn was an important food for the Aztec Indians, who also used popcorn as decoration for ceremonial headdresses, necklaces and ornaments on statues of their gods.
  • For more than 25 years, October has been celebrated as National Popcorn Poppin' Month; however, it became "official" in 1999, when then Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman proclaimed October as the first National Popcorn Poppin' Month.

John Evans Opens New Era as President of NAC - Click to read more

John Evans, Senior Vice President of Gold Medal Products Co., has taken over the helm of the National Association of Concessionaires (NAC). Evans was inducted for his two-year term as president at the national convention in July. He has served on the board for 27 years, was the chair of the regional vice president committee for 14 years, and has been working in the concession industry for 30 years.

Evans is honored to help lead this well-respected, 67-year old association, and feels fortunate to have worked with many of the industry legends. He looks forward to sharing his knowledge and understanding of industry partnerships to enhance the standards of excellence the NAC was founded on.

"My goal is to leverage that understanding and partner with the groups to utilize each other's resources and membership bases," Evans says.

Evans also wants to expand the resources members can use to grow their businesses, and to use technology to enhance education and communication.

"For 30 years, I;ve had an open door policy at Gold Medal and, as President of NAC, I will also implement this policy for open, two-way communication," Evans notes. "I'm excited about the opportunities that are out there."

Evans joined Gold Medal in 1981 as an assistant zone manager after attending Ashland University in Ohio. He became Sales Manager in 1991, was promoted to VP of Sales in 1999, and has been the Senior VP of Gold Medal since 2006. He received the NAC's Bert Nathan Award in 2003, the annual award the association bestows on individuals who have been influential in both the organization and the industry in general.

Evans' grandfather, David C. Evans, began Gold Medal in the heart of The Great Depression in 1931. The privately-held, family business is still located in Cincinnati, OH, including a large manufacturing plant where machines are built from sheet metal. It’s a leader in the concession equipment and supply industry with more than 350 employees, 10 branches, and a global network of dealers.

J.C. Evans, Chairman of Gold Medal Products Co., will receive the 2011 National Association of Concessionaires' Mickey Warner Award at the July NAC Annual Convention & Trade Show. The award is named for the originator of the NAC Concession Manager Certification program, and a great innovator and educator for the concessions industry.

"We are so pleased to be honoring J.C. Evans for his leadership, innovation and contributions to both the concessions industry and to the National Association of Concessionaires," stated NAC President Ron Krueger II of Southern Theatres. "It is an honor well deserved."

J.C. Evans Receives Mickey Warner Award

J.C. grew up in the concession industry after his father, David C. Evans, started Gold Medal in 1931. He began working summers at Gold Medal in the 1940s, graduated from the College of Business Administration at the University of Cincinnati, and completed a two-year tour of duty with the Army's Counterintelligence Corp in Europe. He returned to the company as a salesman in 1950. J.C. was later promoted to sales manager, then to vice president and currently serves as Chairman.

J.C. was also the first recipient of the Outdoor Amusement Business Association's Pioneer Award, and received the Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence from the University of Cincinnati's College of Business. In 2000, he was honored with the NAC Bert Nathan Memorial Award, which recognizes leadership, significant contributions to the development and professionalism of the concessions industry and accomplishments and longevity in the theatre segment of concessions. With the Mickey Warner Award, he becomes one of only four people to receive both of the association's highest honors.

Here we grow again. More and more people around the world are discovering the gold in Gold Medal Products, creating an increased demand for concession equipment and the corresponding supplies. Greater sales and worldwide growth drove the need to expand Gold Medal’s flavor production. In response, the company has expanded its flavor department and renovated some of its facilities. The addition contains 10 more flavor bays, a large capacity elevator, three loading docks, and space for future growth.

The projects will be completed June 18th and mark the third time the company has expanded since opening its current facility in 1997. With this two-level, 13,000+ square foot addition, the Medallion Drive location will be more than 438,000 square feet.

Eighty years ago, a daring man risked everything to support his family. The stock market crashed two years earlier and America was in The Great Depression. David C.
